“When they start the game, they don’t yell ‘Work ball,’ they say ‘Play ball.’” –Willie Stargell

Of all the websites you could be on right now, thanks for landing at this one. This is the inaugural post for Bucco’s Cove, which is going to be an ongoing project for me to air my thoughts, musings, and grievances pertaining to the group of gentlemen known as the Pittsburgh Pirates.

This blog has been something I’ve been tossing around in my head for a while now. While graduate school has been a time of learning and growth for me (biggest change: learning to drink good beers instead of twenty beers), it hasn’t exactly been a good outlet for my personal interests (I’m studying chemistry). Aside from writing quarterly reports for our government-funding overlords, I don’t have much that I’ve written recently, so I figured that a sports blog was a good way to remedy this. Given that the Pirates are what I love and know the most, I think this is the best outlet for my literary ambitions.

I know that the Bucco blogging bandwagon may be a bit crowded, but hopefully this site will carve out a little niche combining statistical analysis, interesting insight, and my own questionably tasteful jokes. In addition to posting game recaps and reactions to news, I want to regularly write longer feature articles discussing something specific; hopefully my background in technical writing is useful for this, knock everyone’s socks off, and Bill Simmons comes knocking in a few months to hire me to write for his new site. Most likely, I’ll be lucky if anyone other than my parents and girlfriend read this for a while. As a gif(t) for even reading this first post right now, here’s a gif of Potato Pete jacking up Chester Cheese a few years back:

"It's not you, it's me."

Check back here regularly for new posts, as I’m going to be doing my absolute best to post a few times per week. You can also follow me on Twitter at @buccoscove for news about the site and much more concise versions of my reflections on the Pirates. I’m looking forward to this project and to sharing the upcoming baseball season with you all! Go Bucs!
