As you may have noticed, I haven't posted since the end of the Cardinals series. This is because I was backpacking all weekend and didn't have any service; doesn't seem like I missed too much, in any case (I was at In 'N' Out when Marte hit the grand slam Friday, so I caught that, and it was mostly downhill from there for the rest of the weekend). Anyway, I should be back in action now and will write up something longer tonight about some of the stuff that happened while I was gone.
Today's news is that Michael Morse was DFA to clear room for A.J. Schugel, who is presumably getting called up to take Ryan Vogelsong's spot in the bullpen, which is vacated because he's starting in place of an injured Liriano. This all makes sense, and hopefully Liriano's injury isn't serious, but the Morse DFA isn't that surprising. The Pirates have plenty of options for righty first basemen, including David Freese (especially once Jung-Ho Kang comes back), Sean Rodriguez, and Jason Rogers, who will presumably get the call up once the pitching settles out a little bit and the rotation goes back to normal.
It's sad to see Morse go, as he wasn't terrible last year for the Buccos down the stretch, but the wheel of life keeps turning and these things happen. I for one am excited to see Jason Rogers get his chance, as I see a decent amount of upside there.
