The Pirates play the Cardinals in another contest that will be crucial in the Pirates hopes toward working back into Wild Card contention. This is the same team they played yesterday and many times over the past couple years, so there isn’t much to say there. Mike Leake takes the hill for the Cards; while he wasn’t part of the Cardinals machine the past couple seasons, the Pirates still know him well from his days with the Reds.
Steven Brault is getting his first career Big League start and he’s pretty excited about it. He’s a guy who started in the Orioles organization and came over in the Travis Snider trade, which is looking pretty great at this point for the Pirates. An 11th rounder from tiny Regis University in Denver, he’s had to work hard to make it to this point. Sporting a 2.51 career Minor League ERA over 4 seasons, Brault has consistently been good throughout his rise through the minors. This season in AAA, he has an impressive 11.31 K/9 (with the huge caveat that he’s only pitched 35 innings so far this year due to injury). This is a spot start from a fringe-Major League guy, but Brault is getting his chance here and will hopefully prove himself to be ready for the show.
(Short sidebar: Jung-Ho Kang is being investigated for sexual assault. This is bad but I'll withhold judgement for the time being since I literally know nothing about what happened and wasn't there, which is how everyone else should be approaching this, too.)
First pitch is at the weird time of 8:09pm EDT, which can only mean the game is on ESPN. At least the Pirates make it on ESPN these days, though! Go Bucs.
